The SA xenophobia emergency information network

short history and description of the goals of the South African Xenophobia Emergency Information Network

Who has started saemergency.info?

Saemergency.info has been the work of a number of volunteers drawn from the NGO sector, media and online publishing. You can see a list of those organisations that have been contributing to the project here.

The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), has been involved in scoping the project and are the authors of the regular site reports which are being posted on the site. Their role in the project followed a meeting of organisations brought together by the Human Rights Commission last month where CSVR volunteered to disseminate information on sites where displaced persons were gathered. A volunteer staff is managing and editing the site. A number of relief organisations and volunteer groups working at various camps, mostly in Gauteng, have been informally consulted in the process of creating it.

Our objective is to build a stronger information network that can be shared by all organisations that have been playing a role in addressing the crisis. By joining the network you can become part of directing the work of the information network going forward. We have resources that will take us through the next month or so, and we will be looking for a suitable institutional home for the site and teh network after that.

How reliable is the information on saemergency.info?

The information on the site comes from relief and other organisations themselves. We aim to ensure that all information published includes a clear statement of the source of the information and the time and date that it was provided. Normally we will also provide a contact point at the source where you can follow up, if necessary.

Copyright and ownership of material, permission to use and credits

Some documents published may contain specific statements of ownership, rights to distribute etc. Other information on the site is provided on the basis that it may be reproduced freely subject to appropriate sourcing and credit. We would request that when using information on the site you appropriately credit or source the organisation providing the information and also cite www.saermergency.info. In this way you are contributing to growing the effectiveness of the network.
